Lani has lived in Hana, Hawaii for five years. She’s learned to surf, fish, dive, and manage her grandmother’s bed and breakfast. She’s also learned to take one day at a time the way it should be taken—relaxed and unrushed, savoring every moment.

But, like a large wave on the brink of breaking, her life is about to crash out of control. A proposal of marriage, a conniving grandmother, a cryptic Asian woman, and a handsome guest, and suddenly everything calm begins to churn, everything clear becomes confused, and all that was normal segues into peculiar.

As Lani struggles against the current to hold her ground, she realizes that she can either continue to fight and eventually lose, or take a take a leap of faith, hold her breath, and ride the wave wherever it takes her.

I have read several books by Rachael Anderson, and have enjoyed them all.  I know when I choose to read one of her books that I am going to get a clean romance with a ‘happy ever after ending’.  That doesn’t mean there is not going to be a few hiccups in the getting there.  Not Always Happenstance is no different.

Lani has lived in Hawaii with her grandmother, Puna, for five years helping her run the bed and breakfast.  She has a nice quiet life, with lots of friends that accept her as part of their families.  She has a boyfriend, Derek, that she has been dating for nine years.  Although they are separated by 2,500 miles their relationship has held strong.  Derek pops the question, and Lani accepts.  She is content with her life, that is until Easton Allard showed up at the bed and breakfast to stay for the summer, and knocks everything off kilter.

Easton travels the world, visiting new places, experiencing different cultures, and befriending the locals.  He has never been good at good byes, so he doesn’t do them.  He just slips away, and never says good bye to anyone he meets on his trips.  However after spending a few weeks in Hana, getting to know Lani, he starts to fear he will not be able just to walk away once Summer comes to an end.

I enjoyed this story.  It had a nice lazy feel to it, and at times I felt that I was experiencing Hawaii for myself.  I did feel the first half of the story was slow at times, but by the middle of the book things started moving right along.  Pearl the mysterious woman, with a Chinese accent adds wisdom and hope to the story.  I enjoyed watching Lani and Easton become friends, and the romance between them was sweet.  While the story was predictable, I still enjoyed myself, and plan to read the other books in the Matchmaker series as they are released throughout the year.

I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good, sweet, clean romance, with a light feel.  If you are already a fan of Rachael Anderson’s books, you will not be disappointed in this one.

A USA Today bestselling author, Rachael Anderson is the mother of four and is pretty good at breaking up fights, or at least sending guilty parties to their rooms. She can’t sing, doesn’t dance, and despises tragedies. But she recently figured out how yeast works and can now make homemade bread, which she is really good at eating.
